I am a senior in high school and plan to live on my own after college (2-years) I'm gonna get a job after I graduate and save up some money but I would like to know all the things I should know or think about before I, you know. Thanks. What advice would you give someone who wants to rent an apartment after college?
Your straight out of college and your not going to live in trump plaza. Ask your neighbors about there biggest issues. Almost all the people you ask will give you a good answer. Most of all make sure you can afford it.What advice would you give someone who wants to rent an apartment after college?
It depends on where ya wanna go ta college! If its close stay
with Mom and Dad!!
Research it well. Make sure you are finding a good/safe place and also make sure that it fits your lifestyle. Some apartments are great for single moms and others are great for active singles. Also, if you sign a lease, make sure you have budgeted carefully. One apartment may seem like a dream but if it is 10% over your budget you will gradually start not being able to afford it, but you are locked in. Be picky (if you can be - NYC or San Francisco residents cannot be as lucky) and find what you really want. Washer and dryer hookups? A pool? Lots of storage space? Really, it is YOUR space, don't think of it as just transitional to ';when you buy a house.'; Also, have fun with it! Make sure you leave room in your budget for a few fun pieces of furniture. Good Luck!
use an agent, don't rent without one unless you really know the person well.
I never had to worry about this before as I assumed most apartments have reasonable thick walls. But my current apartment is horrible for sound. It is worse than sharing a house with people as most houses have thicker interior walls then the ones I share with my neighbors.
If you can do anything to see about the quality of soundproofing between apartments before you rent I highly recommend doing it. The first 3 i rented out of college were fine so I never even considered it but this current one is really bad.
Get a room mate
here's some advice that you can apply to anything, including your living arrangement....DON'T LIVE BEYOND YOUR MEANS.
if that means you have to get a roommate...
if that means you can't live in the nicest place...
if that means you have to live at home for awhile...
if that means you can't eat steak every night...
you gotta do what you gotta do in order to live within your means.
READ the LEASE!!!!
