Any advice on how to start my shitz zu walking with a leash?

He is 4 months old. We have one that has that elastic part that pulls and he goes crazy! Pulls on it when we clip it on him; thrashes wildly like he's a fish on a hook! Please help! Should we buy the standard kind and how do you teach a puppy to get used to a leash?Any advice on how to start my shitz zu walking with a leash?
Go buy a regular leash- put it on him in the house and let him drag it around for a couple of days- that's how I got all of my dogs used to it- seems to work pretty good.Any advice on how to start my shitz zu walking with a leash?
i know this sounds mean ,but when my puppy started walking he did the same thing. go to your local pet store and buy a choke collar. after a couple of times you can remove it.

thanks
Just tie it to his neck and let him get used to it. Supervise him of course as you don't want him hanging himself. Then as he gets used to having a leash on pick it up and let him go where he wants around the house, for this I would use a long leash or a clothes line or something long. Don't put no tension on the leash, just hold it and follow him. Then once he gets used to it try to get him to follow you around the house with you holding the leash, again no tension on the leash have him follow you, use treats if need be. The whole point is to make the leash a good experiance. If you just clip it onthe dog and he starts struggling that makes the leash look like a bad thing to the dog. So just go really slow at first in no time at all he'll be walking on the leash and you can start using the leash for correction. If you have other dogs you can use them in the training cause the pup will follow his pack. This is how I taught my dogs to walk on a leash, nice, slow, and easy.
Blackcat gave great info!

DO NOT GET A CHOKE COLLAR. Not on a Shih Tzu. It's not a matter of cruelty. On bigger breeds choke collars work great. On small breeds they harm their throats. A harness will work better than a collar for training. Once you get past the dragging the leash around part, work on having him go your way. Do NOT pull on him. If he goes the wrong direction let him go to the end of the leash, say THIS WAY, LET'S GO. Once he gets the hang of it change directions often. Always praise, don't punish.
Get a regular leash and a harness rather than a collar (it's harder to slip out of). Just be patient and consistent.
well i am sure that you know that shih tzu's are very stubborn dogs. when you are taking him out simply lean down and calm him down, try to speak in a elevated voice, a happy voice, pet him, sooth him. this is how i got my parents shih tzu to know it is ok to have a leash on.
