I have a Kenmore washer, can't find the book. Need help with diagnosing its problem. I think it might be the transmission.Where can I get advice on repairing my own washing machine?

There is no transmission in a washing machine. If you hear grindy noises, it is most likely the main bearing on the tub assembly. Moderately difficult repair, but it is doable. You'll need a special wrench to get the old one off and it has LEFT HAND threads...
If it wont agitate or spin but will pump out,I suspect the drive coupling. Check out the repair procedure I posted in DIY yesterday. Two many steps to post again.
You might want to consider just buying a new one!!
