Does anyone have any advice to how I can memorize a song for a violin recital?

I'm having a really hard time memorizing it. Am I doing any good listening to it over and over on my ipod when I'm not playing it?Does anyone have any advice to how I can memorize a song for a violin recital?
The ipod is good for helping with finishing touches such as articulations, dynmanics and phrasing. Though you want to be careful who you imatate. I've heard some extremely poor recordings that I would not want to sound like.

The first step to memorizing is to break the piece down into small components. Depending on the piece, break it up into sections. For ex. a basic sonata I. Exposition, II. Development, III. Recapitulation. Then break it up some more. Ex. Exposition (basic sonata) I. Theme I , II. Theme II, Theme three, IV. Closing theme, V. Coda. Then break it down some more. I. Theme one ----%26gt; period 1, period 2.

You guessed it break it down some more. Period 1 ---%26gt; phrase 1, phrase 2.

After tearing the piece apart memerorize one small phrase at a time. Start really slow and pay attention to details such as note accuracy and rhythm accuracy, fingerings (the right ones), bowing. Even if it takes 2hrs to get the phrase up to 12bpm (major exageration) do it, because if you can't play it slow you will never get it at full speed. Go through the piece working measure by measure if you have to. Write down notes that are troublesome and don't be afraid to write on the page. Believe me I have some pieces that you can barely see the notes because of all the writing on it.

Another thing to watch for is sections that you have already played. For example, almost all sonatas have material that is repeated several times throughout the piece. Use this to your advantage and study your piece, searching for these repeated section. It will save you loads of time.

This is only a short list of suggestions, just remember keep it simple, keep it slow and if the part gets to rough STOP, relax and take a deep breath. No point in stressing becuase it is only going to make it worse.Does anyone have any advice to how I can memorize a song for a violin recital?
heya

i would suggest to think about and picture the music whilst you are actually AWAY from the instrument.

my teacher said passingly to my performance class -that you really need to be able to say everysingle note name of the piece from beginning to end, to really know that you have itnailed in your head (fortunately we don't have double stops!)

all the best dude, but finally, ..!

as always with music- work in sections not all at once :)

gooo go go!
You will have to play it yourself over and over again. Usually I end up memorizing pieces on accident just by playing them a lot. Try to take it piece by piece. Don't try to think about it because you are trying to let it become a reflex. When you think, you have too much lag time in between the notes so it makes it harder to memorize especially when you have faster notes going on. I'm sorry if this is hard to understand but it is hard to explain.

So they best thing is to play it over and over without thinking about it. Then try to play along with the music without the sheet music in front of you.
