I'm going to university soon to study nutrition (applied science). Was hoping to get some tips from former science students on how to make the learning/memorizing/commiting go a little more smoothly. What is the best advice you can give to a new science student?
Study groups help a lot. You'll make friends and have someone to commiserate with, too.
Be prepared for a lot of work, and not being able to party with your liberal arts roommates.
When you get discouraged, remember that you'll be graduating with a degree that will put you well on your way for a great career! What is the best advice you can give to a new science student?
Nutrition is one of the easier sciences.
I am a molecular biologist. I used to recite in the shower; i'd have it memorized in minutes.
STUDY...everyday not just before a midterm or exam...talk to your profs! if you don't understand, most of them are approachable
Read, read, read. Memorize much. Study in teams if you can. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
It does help to rewrite you lecture notes within a day of the lecture so that you can look back on them and understand it.
Whenever I forgot to rewrite things, I'd look back on my lecture notes and have no idea what's going on.
Do active study, not just passive study.
Instead of copying out of a textbook, draw diagrams/flowcharts/whatever. It gets the mind thinking and I found it extremely helpful.
Study groups are great too. If you don't understand something then someone will be able to teach you (and if they don't know, you can look it up and learn it together). And if they don't understand something that you do then you can teach them, reinforcing it in your mind. It's a win-win situation.
