I have a Kenmore washer, can't find the book. Need help with diagnosing its problem. I think it might be the transmission.Where can I get advice on repairing my own washing machine?

There is no transmission in a washing machine. If you hear grindy noises, it is most likely the main bearing on the tub assembly. Moderately difficult repair, but it is doable. You'll need a special wrench to get the old one off and it has LEFT HAND threads...
If it wont agitate or spin but will pump out,I suspect the drive coupling. Check out the repair procedure I posted in DIY yesterday. Two many steps to post again.
You might want to consider just buying a new one!!

What is the best advice someone can give to a male bartender just starting out, to make the most money?
I've worked in a kitchen for several years now, and am cross-training as a bartender in the same resteraunt. I'd like to be able to get a good feel for all the basic alcholic drinks plus any tips and strategies people might have for making the best out of every customer to ensure great tips. My husband and I have owned nightclubs and been in restaurant and bar management for years. The staff who made the most in tips had the following going for them:
1. Make every customer feel as if they are a guest in your home.
2. Stay professional. Being too flirty can and will put some of your high dollar tippers off.
3. Practice, practice, practice. Know your drinks as well as the garnish and right glass.
4. Know and follow your state liquor laws. You never know who is your next customer. You protect yourself, your employer, and your customer if you do not break the law.
5. Learn bar tricks. I have had several staff members that have earned in excess of 600.00 in a night just from the bar trick tips she learned. There are a lot of them listed on line. Just go to webcrawler.com and type in bar tricks.

Your tips are going to come from the cocktail waitresses. They give ten percent of their tips so make them happy, let them be prompt and they will tip you well, make them wait one time, and they will nail you.
Most people are looking for just one reason to not tip you or tip less.
So , be as fast as you can on the drink making and that is all you can do.
One thing to remember is, treat your best tipping waitress the best and with prejudice. Let it be known, she gets better treatment because she is such a good tipper and the rest will come around. That is how it is in reality

If the drink recipes are not programmed into your system, bring a basic listing with you. If you can't remember the ingredients to a particular drink (like a stone sour -- is it grapefruit or orange juice?) don't be afraid to ask the customer (I rarely make those...remind me -- what is in that?) Sure, it may sound awkward, but the customer will apreciate the drink made right the first time.
Also, it NEVER hurts to flirt with both sexes (if you're a guy you wouldn't believe the number of guys with gfriends or wives who give off a gay vibe, and you need to work it). My husband and I just got back from a trip to Germany from the US.
Things I learned -
Pack well-organized for the plane. Everything you need for the baby should fit in one bag if possible.
Use a carrier in the airport. We used the Ergo. You also don't have to take the baby out of it when going thru security (at least not in the US).
If your baby is already on solids, take snacks to keep him entertained.
Buy a new toy and only give it to him on the plane.
Book the bulkhead seats.
If you can, take the carseat onboard and put it in the seat next to you if the flight isnt' overbooked. I realized how defenseless our baby is on our laps during take off and landing and it also gives you a break if you can put baby in the carseat to sleep or while you eat. On one of our flights I had to have baby in my lap the entire 7 hours! Check with the airline.
Take anything and everytying you use on a daily basis with you.
Pack lots of clothes and bibs.
Be prepared for baby to have trouble with jetlag.
If you still nurse, do it during take off/landing and also during the night when baby wakes due to jetlag.
Make sure your husband knows where everything is in the carry ons. It takes lots of energy to constantly be explaining what you need and here it is!
Try not to have too many expectations! Just go with the flow!

Ignore the small/no tippers, give loads of service to the big tippers. Bottom line. You have to be fast -- don't waste your time on the deadbeats, and make 'em wait. Shower attention on the big tippers, over pour, and give 'em anything they want. Bend the rules and make 'em think you NEVER do that (depending on where you work, like if you work for a big chain, this may not be possible). If the drink recipes are not programmed into your system, bring a basic listing with you. If you can't remember the ingredients to a particular drink (like a stone sour -- is it grapefruit or orange juice?) don't be afraid to ask the customer (I rarely make those...remind me -- what is in that?) Sure, it may sound awkward, but the customer will apreciate the drink made right the first time.
Also, it NEVER hurts to flirt with both sexes (if you're a guy you wouldn't believe the number of guys with gfriends or wives who give off a gay vibe, and you need to work it). I'm not saying jump over the bar and make out with them, but work it. I've had loads of married men give me huge tips for merely flirting.

My husband and I have owned nightclubs and been in restaurant and bar management for years. The staff who made the most in tips had the following going for them:
1. Make every customer feel as if they are a guest in your home.
2. Stay professional. Being too flirty can and will put some of your high dollar tippers off.
3. Practice, practice, practice. Know your drinks as well as the garnish and right glass.
4. Know and follow your state liquor laws. You never know who is your next customer. You protect yourself, your employer, and your customer if you do not break the law.
5. Learn bar tricks. I have had several staff members that have earned in excess of 600.00 in a night just from the bar trick tips she learned. There are a lot of them listed on line. Just go to webcrawler.com and type in bar tricks.

make each and every customer feel as if you are very happy to see them. get to know regulars names and greet them with a big smile and make them feel that you are so glad they came in again. flirting is not a great idea as it seperates by gender and you want them all to feel good plus jealousy can get involved it can just be a mess dealing with the spouses and leading to false assumptions. ugh! when a customer has no idea what they want to drink ask what they like, sweet sour spicy etc and have a selection of each to offer. if you notice a customer always has a certain drink ie: blended fruity, tell them you have a new similar drink they might like. whip up a small taste for them
attention attention attention. they are not there to notice you they want you to notice them
never ever let them hear you say they are cheap tippers or let them hear you say some cheapo only left a dollar
im sure this will help: know all the days top stories and headlines, and all the major sports going ons, especially around guys. knowing these items will help you out because you can easily start a conversation with someone, thus adding to your tip. next know what you serve, because you never know what you will be asked. know how things taste, and how they go down. you might get alot of newcomers as well so you wanna make the bar nice and easy to enjoy and comfortable as well.

My best advice is to SMILE and greet people as they come in. Don't tell them that even a small tip is a big deal. That implies that they are small tippers, and it's just plain rude to ask for money. People will tip. You don't have to ask them to. Just be friendly, but use caution as a male bartender that you don't come off as gay. (Unless you are) Girls can flirt in a lot more ways than guys.
As far as actually making the drinks, get the complete bartenders hand book. Also, start asking around because a lot of the trendy new drinks aren't in the book. Ask a question here about some new drinks/shots. A lot of times the customer will also help you if it's something they drink a lot.

What everyone else said are very good pointers, but they're missing the most important. Act in a way that you're happy your customers are there. Laugh, smile and have a good time. This takes skill, because all customers are different in the amount of liveliness they want when they visit a bar. Feel your customers out. The most important thing is going the extra mile to make them feel at home, and make them feel privledged that they're a guest of yours. Never be grumpy. Leave your personal life at the front door. Follow these and you will get great tips. Doing this will also give you new customers. A person that has a great experience at a bar tells 5 people. A person that has a bad experience tells 20 people....remember that and you'll do just fine.

a lil flirting is good once in awhile, but beware.....there might be a hubby or b/f standing behind! talk to the customers but keep it brief when it is just chit chat as you havea full house to tend to. but really listen to those who need it when its almost closing time, for the words you say may be the last words heard from the sad person your talking too. Do not be afraid to cut someone off, as you could be saving theyre life or lives of others!

I am looking for advice on whether to buy or not to buy an 80+ yr old home w/ a cracked fieldstone foundation.
I have heard, if there is a fieldstone foundation, to run away. This house has been untouched for about 38 years. No one has done anything to the basement which is all fieldstone. there is no basement floor, it is plywood over dirt. Is this common? How costly is this of a project to restore?I am looking for advice on whether to buy or not to buy an 80+ yr old home w/ a cracked fieldstone foundation.

Provided the price is OK then it's not too serious, I have lived in 2 houses which were of fieldstone, and had no problems.

A house is only as good as its foundation. If the foundation is cracked then more than likely you will find other hidden things wrong. Sorry I don't know any thing about field stone, only block. But sounds very expensive to fix.

I also got an estimate of $6,500 to secure and raise the entire house to prepare it for a new foundation (the same price as it is to move it). My house is only 24x34'. I have not gotten an estimate for the foundation itself, and that would depend on the type ie, concrete footings and piers (columns), concrete slab, etc. Also, grading really should be done to my house to make water flow away from it--around $600. Make sure to get several estimates from licensed contractors. I would strongly recommend hiring a licensed Home Inspector before closing on this house should you decide to make an offer. Some can give you rough estimates as well. Good Luck!!

The space should not be used as living area just in case of water problems. But I have seen allot of concrete foundations w/ cracks in them.
